Risk Management Philosophy
HPIX’s risk management philosophy is the philosophy of our Physician members. We believe that providing quality patient care is a fundamental value of the medical profession. We also know that in the practice of the art and science of medicine, it is inevitable that negative or unexpected outcomes will occur.
Effective risk management is the art of recognizing, identifying and reducing risk to lessen exposure to possible claims. It is also the science of retrospectively addressing risk exposures and risk-rich trends identified by claims.
Some insurance companies simply do not attempt to practice risk reduction. They believe that by increasing premium revenue they will build sufficient funds to pay claims when they occur. Some companies even prefer not to discuss events until claims are filed in the form of a legal action. This approach ignores the ability of Physicians to improve the quality of care when provided with meaningful prospective risk reduction information. It also ignores the substantial cost of preventable injuries and legal claims, both in dollars and human suffering.
HPIX is different. We believe our Physicians are dedicated to reducing risk, lessening exposure to claims, and improving quality of care. We are here to help identify risks and to help provide tools that can be used to safeguard patients, protect medical practices, and serve Physicians.
